While it may not reach the catastrophic scale of a planet-destroying asteroid, it possesses the potential to inflict significant damage, particularly if it were to impact a densely populated region. This celestial body belongs to the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, a classification of space rocks that intersect Earth’s orbit with semi-major axes larger than that of our planet. These asteroids derive their name from the colossal 1862 Apollo asteroid, which was originally discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s.

Remarkably, this marks the first-ever close approach of Asteroid 2023 RH2 to Earth in recorded history. As per NASA’s Small-Body Database Lookup, there are no imminent future close encounters projected between this asteroid and our planet.
